*The war between the United States and Spain began on April 25, 1898, and was known as the Spanish American War.

*The war against Spain began several months after the sinking of the Battleship Maine on February 15, 1898, in Havana, Cuba.

*Commodore George Dewey sailed to the Philippines to attack Spain's Pacific fleet in the what was known as the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898.

*The 1st United States Volunteer Calvary Regiment became known as the Rough Riders. They were instrumental in obtaining victory at San Juan Hill.

*The Battle of San Juan Hill, also known as the Battle of San Juan Heights, was the most important battle of the Spanish American War as the war ended in the victory for America after this battle.

*When Spain was defeated in the Spanish-American War, it lost Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Philippine Islands.
