*The Purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, and the purchase of Florida from *In 1867, America purchased Alaska from Russia. *Secretary of State William H. Seward agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. Many referred to his purchase as "Seward's Folly"y. *America's movement west had severe consequences for Native Americans. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi.
*Lewis and Clark blazed the way for westward expansion, and led the first United States expedition (1804-1806) to the Pacific Coast while mapping the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. *Brigham Young led 70,000 Mormons along the Mormon Trail from 1846 to 1869 to escape religious persecution. *The Overland Trail (also known as the Overland Stage Line) was a stagecoach and wagon trail route in the American West during the 19th century. *The California Trail was the main route to the Golden State of California. Over 250,000 gold-seekers and farmers followed that trail in hopes of finding riches and better land to farm. *The Cherokee Trail, also known as the Trappers' Trail, was established in 1849 by a wagon train headed to the gold fields in California. *The Sante Fe Trail was known as the "Highway to the Southwest". *The Oregon Trail stretched for 2.00 miles, and was a wagon train route that connected towns on the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon and the towns in between. *The Applegate Trail which originated in 1846 was the southern route of the Oregon Trail. There were many less known westward trails. Some of those included: Apache Pass Trail, Bozeman Trail, Cooke's Wagon Road, El Camino del Diablo, Southern Emigrant Trail, The National Road.
*The pioneers faced many hardships as they moved westward, and sadly many died because of the difficulties they faced. *The prairie fire, as described in a letter by prairie farmers, John and Sarah Kenyon, was one of the big problems that pioneers feared. Life in a log cabin was not easy. Every family member was responsible for helping to maintain the household. *Many pioneer children never attended school because they were needed at home as an extra farm hand. Early pioneer schools were just one room with several grades.. *Pioneers spent most of their time growing foods to be eaten, and tending to animals that could provide food. |
