*America declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812, beginning the War of 1812. The war ended in a stalemate.

*Many called the War of 1812 the Second War of Independence or the Second American Revolution.

*American forces failed in capturing Canada.

On August 18, 1814, British forces marched into Washington and burned the Capitol and White House. Dolly Madison became a hero by saving key documents from the White House as well as the famous painting of George Washington.

On July 5, 1814, American forces defeated British forces in the Battle of Chippewa ending the War of 1812.

*There were many important battles in the War of 1812: Battle of Baltimore, Battle of Chippewa, Battle of Chrysler's Farm, Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Battle of Lake Champlain, Battle of Lake Erie, Battle of Lundy's Lane, Battle of New Orleans, Battle of Queenston Heights, Battle of Raisin River, The "siege" of Detroit, Battle of Thames, and the Battle of York.

There was a total of 34 forts that were used during the War of 1812.

*The War of 1812 ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814. The treaty was not a ratified until February 17th 1815.
