What Was life Like in Colonial America

Interesting Facts about What Colonial Life was Like in Colonial America

*The Colonial Period in America took place between the early 1500s and late 1700s.

*The colonists established 13 colonies. These colonies are presently known as: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia

*Many settlers came to America establish colonies where they had religious freedom.

*When the colonists arrived in America, life was very difficult. They had to clear the land using hand tools, build their own houses, produce all of their own food, and make their own clothing.

*Family life was extremely important. Everything revolved around the family and family members.

*Farming was extremely important in the colonial times. Colonial families had to farm for survival, and every family member had chores to help with the farming.

*Squanto, a Native American, taught many of the colonists how to plant crops and how to hunt for wild animals.

*Many of the colonists who arrived were unprepared for the harsh conditions they were to face, and many died from health problems.

*Tools used the colonists, whether the tools were for the home or for farming, had to be made by hand.

*Of course electricity did not exist for the early colonists. They used candles for light and had to make their own candles.

*Not only did the colonists have to make their own candles, but they also had to make their own soaps which was a very long and difficult process.

*The role of women in early America was not easy. It was the women who took care of all the family needs. She prepared meals, made clothing, canned foods, and raised the children.

*Manners were very important during the colonial era. Colonial children were taught manners from a very early age.

*After a colony was settled, fathers worked outside the home in various colonial trades. There were over 18 major trade professions in colonial America. The children were often taught that trade so that when they were older they could help with the family trade or even take it over.

*The phrase keep me posted" comes from the colonial period. Before the newspaper was developed, news was written on a paper, and posted in town on a wooden post for the colonists to read.

*The "town crier" was another way that the colonists kept up on the news. He would travel from town to town ringing a bell to get everyone's attention, and speak the news.

*African American slavery played a big part in the history of the early colonies. Slavery began in 1619 in Virginia. Large numbers of Africans were brought to North American against their will. Over 200,000 slaves lived in the colonies by the year 1750, and faced depressing challenges.
