Discovery
and Exploration Maps from the Library of Congress:Documents
the discovery and exploration of the Americas with both manuscripts
and published maps. Many of these maps reflect the European Age
of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century
when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline
of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas
and the major waterways. Also included are 18th and 19th century
maps documenting the exploration and mapping of the interior parts
of the continents, reflecting the work of Lewis and Clark and subsequent

*Prior to the fifteenth century people of the ancient world gained knowledge about the world through trade merchants or Kings hoping to conquer new lands.
*Early explorers explored the world for many reasons: Some of the reasons were: to learn more about the world, to find gold and silver, to find new trade routes, and often to expland their empire.
*Portuguese Explorers were the first Europeans to explore the world in the fifteenth century, and the first to sail around the tip of Africa.
*The Vikings were a vicious group of warriors who raided, traded, explored and settled in wide areas of Europe and the North Atlantic islands from the late 790 A.D. to the 1100 A.D..
Between the years 1519–1522 Magellan became the first explorer to circumnavigate the globe, sailing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
*The French began exploring to expand their fur trade.
*Spanish explorers wanted to gain a larger empire, wealth, and spread Christianity.
*The world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik, was launched by the Russians on October 4, 1957.
Before manned space flight could take place, Albert II, a Rhesus Monkey, was sent into space to determine if man could survive space flights.
*Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, was known as the "First Man in Space". His flight took place in April of 1961.
Alan Shepard was the first American astronaut in space. His flight took place on May 5, 1961.
