*The Middle Colonies were part of the 13 original colonies. The colonies included in the Middle Colonies were: Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

*The Middle Colonies were known as the "breadbasket" because of the large amounts barley, rye, and other grains that were grown there. The Middle Colonies produced more food than the New England or Southern Colonies.

*The Delaware colony was founded in 1638 Peter Minuit and New Sweden Company. Instead of calling it Delaware, they called it New Sweden. Sir Thomas West, Lord de la Warr later named it Delaware.

*Delaware is named after the Lord De La Warr who was an English governor of Virginia in colonial times.

*The Province of New Jersey was founded in 1664 by Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.

*New Jersey was named after the English Channel island of Jersey.

*In 1664 the English seized what was then known as New Amsterdam from the Dutch and renamed the city New York.

*Peter Stuyvesant the last of the Dutch governors in New Amsterdam.

*The Province of New York was founded in 1626 by the Duke of York.

*New York was named after the Duke of York.

*Peter Minuit was the very first governor of New York.

*The Province of Pennsylvania was founded in 1682 by William Penn.
